Highways Liaison

The highways Integrated Works Programme (or IWP) is Hertfordshire’s annual programme of major works to maintain and improve the highway network.

It includes maintenance works to roads, bridges, pavements and the like as well as improvement schemes to tackle safety problems, reduce congestion or assist pedestrians, to name just a few of the options. You can see more details of some of the common types of IWP works in Introduction to Highways Maintenance and Integrated Transport Projects, both are attached below.

The IWP is a two-year process; the various scheme and programmes are developed and integrated into the IWP over the first year at the end of which the IWP is endorsed by the Cabinet. The works are then delivered, usually over the course of the following year, although some schemes span several years.

In addition to the IWP, Hertfordshire also has a highways Forward Works Programme (or FWP), which is a longer-term list of possible future works. The FWP is used in the development of the IWP.
